PAIN SCALE FOR DOGS CHART

BACK ↰

The first part of the initial appointment is understanding your pet’s disposition, constitution/energetics and the family dynamics.  It’s important to understand your pet’s first weeks of life, medical history normal behaviors, quirks, and personality to provide treatment plan that make sense for your pet.

BACK ↰

MY OBSERVATION/ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION

Along with the musculoskeletal (MSK), gait and posture assessment, your pet’s constitution will be evaluated.  Are they hot/cold; timid/anxious/angry; what ‘element’ governs their constitution?   This all strongly influences the presenting signs/symptoms and most often at the root of their condition.  MSK observations include:

  • The 4 T’s: texture, tension, tonicity, temperature changes in body areas?
  • How flexible is your pet with passive range of motion and with movement?
  • Are your pet’s major muscles groups tight?
  • Are there muscle spasms when touched?
  • Are any areas painfulto the touch?
  • What is their strength level for the age/situation?
  • Is there muscle loss ..one sided or both sides?
  • What is their weight bearing status? Any knuckling?
  • And many many more observations to evaluate

Helping Every Animal Live Well means looking beyond the basic physical care

BACK ↰

Understanding your expectations help guide the session; for example:  pain management or post operative physical care.  Session findings, session improvements and next steps are discussed at the end of each session.

BACK ↰

  • Ensure your pet comes to their appointment in a calm mental state.  They are exercised (if appropriate) and not too hungry.   Liver or duck treats are used as motivation and reward during their session.
  • If your pet is on a special diet or has a favorite treat that they love, bring a small bag with you that we can use during their appointment.
  • Be prepared that you may be asked to be your pet’s personal cheerleader initially until she/he gets in the groove of what is happening.  The best motivation for a pet during treatment is encouragement from their family.
  • Have your pet relieve themselves just prior to their session
